Fauquier County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 55,139. Its county seat is Warrenton. This county is a part of the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area.

History

Fauquier County was established on May 1, 1759 from Prince William County. The county is named for Francis Fauquier, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia at the time.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,687 km˛ (651 mi˛). 1,683 km˛ (650 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 55,139 people, 19,842 households, and 15,139 families residing in the county. The population density is 33/km˛ (85/mi˛). There are 21,046 housing units at an average density of 13/km˛ (32/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 88.39% White, 8.79% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 2.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,842 households out of which 36.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.80% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.70% are non-families. 18.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $61,999, and the median income for a family is $69,507. Males have a median income of $45,484 versus $31,738 for females. The per capita income for the county is $28,757. 5.40% of the population and 3.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.70% of those under the age of 18 and 8.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

MIDDLEBURG is a town located in Loudoun County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 632. It is the hometown of Wendy Pepper, the finalist on the hit TV show Project Runway, and is the headquarters of the singer Lisa Reagan. It is also where U.S. Senator John Warner lived with his wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor. (They were married from 1976-1982.) President John F. Kennedy also had a holiday home there for many years. It is also the site of many scenes from the NBC television series The West Wing, standing in as the President's hometown in several episodes. Linda Tripp (a key player in the Monicagate scandal) and her husband own a year-round Christmas shop, called the Christmas Sleigh, in Middleburg. The contestants of The Amazing Race: Family Edition visited Welbourne Manor in Middleburg.

MARSHALL is a town in Fauquier County, Virginia. Marshall was originally called Glascock. The town became Marshall after a short lived incorporation. Marshall is named after John Marshall, the former Supreme Court Chief Justice. The town is bordered on the north and west by the "Freestate". The Freestate was an area where people could live off of the land. The Freestate was also known for its giants, trolls, and other folklore. More recently the area was known as the home of Hoghead. Hoghead was a local philosopher and he died in December, 2004.

Horse Races, Shows, and Events

When someone from Alexandria, Silver Spring or McLean asks a Fauquier County resident where they live, many times they respond with the question, "Ever been to the Gold Cup?" Nearly 100,000 people from around the world visit Fauquier County each year to witness the oldest steeplechase race in the country. And even though The Virginia Gold Cup and International Gold Cup are two of our County's largest draws, they are only the beginning of the rich experiences you'll find so close to our Nations capital.

Each Friday night in the Spring and Fall tailgators gather at Great Meadow in The Plains for Twilight Polo. Fun for all ages, the matches feature outstanding competition, a beautiful view of the landscape, and a chance see an old friend or find a new one.

The Upperville Horse Show is one of the premier events in the world of equestrian sports, and is held year each June. It features the prestigious $100,000 Budweiser Upperville Jumper Classic along with several days of competition leading up to this world class event. You are very likely to see an Olympic hopeful, or a past Olympic medalist in the competition.

Historical Sites and Attractions

Its hard to find a book about the Civil War that doesn't mention Fauquier County, Virginia. From John S Mosby to The Black Horse Cavalry, the county is rich in Civil War history and lore. The Old Jail Museum in historic Old Town Warrenton features relics from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and exhibits including the John S. Mosby collection.
